Fixing Garageband 8-bit Error Audio Files - continued
A number of people have contacted me recently to try the fixed1t fixer which was created initially as a part of a suite of Garageband programs. As part of the suit all users became aware of the need to perform a Save As on the Garageband file and save it as an archive, by ticking the archive box.
However new users, weren't aware of this, if you don't archive you don't export the audio files. A good indicator of this is if the file is less than 5 meg, the it has no audio files.

Therefore users of the Trial 8-bit fixer need to do this, here is a blog entry I did specifically to address this issue:
It is also important, especially with the newer version of garageband to identify the damaged files, and as Apple have move to an all 'AIFF' design then the fixed1t datalister does an excellent job at spotting and displaying them

Garageband 2 iOS7 and 10 prevent Mac to iPad.. Conversion But Here's a fixed1t work around ;-)
Note:
iPad... = iPad 2, 3, or 4, iPhone 4(s) - 5(s), iPad Touch 4th/5th Gen
GB = Garageband
Please read my previous blogs about iOS7 and GB 2 and GB 10, I was quite enthusiastic about the potential for iCloud sharing between platforms. I was excited a little too soon.
fixed1t Sum-up of the Garageband Song Sharing Issues
Apple has seriously modified the song/project code for GB 10, under Mavericks which totally blocks Mac GB to iPad... Song transfer.
Here are the new game play rules as I see them if you want to collaborate with other iPad... Mac Musicians.
Rule 1) Any song opened in Free Mac GB 10 currently refuses to load or open on any iPad... ACTION - Jump to Rule X
Rule 2) fixed1t Converters work brilliantly on any GB 11 song archive :-)
- They run great with 10.5 Leopard to 10.9 Mavericks OS :-)
- When transferred to GB 1 for iOS they can happily ping-pong back from Mac GB 11 to and iPad... :-)
- When transferred to iOS 7 GB 2 they can no longer be opened again with GB 11 :-(
Rule 3) Once the GB 11 song file is fixed1t converted to iOS7 GB 2 it can be shared back and forth with other other iCloud iPad... devices :-)
Rule 4) An iOS7 GB 2 song file can be download from the iCloud using free GB 10 :-)
Rule 5) Once the song is downloaded to the Mac GB 10, we must Jump to Rule 1
Rule X) iPad... sharing End Of The Line - the Song can only be worked on by users with Mac GB 10 :-)
This is a real pain for an increasing number of users who were really enjoying sending files back and forth between Macs and their iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch.
Recommendation To fixed1t Users
What I an recommending to my users is they keep their install of GB 11 an and compress it and delete the application(see the blog entry), They then install NewGarageband. Once its installed and has the name NewGarageband you can uncompress the Garageband 11 and have both available. I made dock entries for each.
I am also recommending that they retrieve a backup of Garageband 1 on an iPad... so they and their friends can share between the Macs and their iPad... If they get to the stage that it is only iPad... sharing i.e. near the completion of the song, then they can convert it and load it into Garageband 2 on iOS7 which means they should be able to share the files between iPad...
When they have finished and are ready to Master, they can (if they want) open it on Garageband 10 on the Mac and finish it there.
Personally, I'll be going back to Garageband 11 and Garageband 1
I'll do a quick blog if I sort out the way forward.
To use or test the converter, and get your songs onto the iPad you will need Garageband 11 and either Garageband 1 or Garageband 2, but again once its on Garageband 2 it won't go back to Garageband 11 for the time being.
So there are my fixed1t workarounds, Apple have just made it a darn sight more complicated. At least with the fixed1t converters the conversion is so seamless and quite that it reduces some of the pain.
But as they say, no pain no pleasure. Personally I'll stick with the pleasure.
As you can imagine creating my blogs and videos takes time, so if you find this useful please consider making a small donation using the Donate button at the top of the right hand column. Even a few dollars really helps to justify to those indoors the time I spend on these 'it's a great excuse' :-). But if you don't wish to donate thats fine but it would useful if you could give the fix a thumbs up and pop back to leave a message. Please check out my other videos and blogs.
Many Thanks

OSX 10.8 Mac Garageband Song transferred to an iPad 4 running iOS7 and Garageband 2
fixed1t converted the Black Magic Woman Mac Garageband Song to export to an iPad 4 running iOS7 and the latest Garageband 2. It works great and what a great new luck and feel Garageband 2 has on the iDevices.
Here's a screen snapshot I just took as it was playing:
The original file was used to test the fixed1t Mac Garageband to iPad 4 converter. Its great to know that the fixed1t software instruments work well with iOS7 and Garageband 2.
This song was used as a test song for my blog page on converting songs with software instruments to run on the iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch.

Why do all Mac Garageband software instruments turn into pianos on the iPad iPhone iPod Touch
I've created a new video:
I start the video by showing that the Mac Garageband standard software instruments are not compatible with the instruments on the iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch running IOS Garageband,
Having shown the issue the video goes on to show how the new fixed1t custom Software Instruments allow a high level of compatibility as I create a Bach Concerto in Mac Garageband using strings and port it successfully to the iPad.
I finish the video with a midi version of Black Magic Woman I created in Mac Garageband and converted, this which shows that the fixed1t software instruments contain:
Guitars
Keyboards
Basses
Strings
Drums
Organ
I hope you like the video, it really shows the flexibility and speed of using the converter, along with the fixed1t Mac Garageband Software Instruments are a great combination. You wouldn't want to be doing it manually. Would You? ;-)

Why wont my Mac Garageband song 'Save As' an Archive Song File?
To answer this question I'm using a classic track Black Magic Woman by Santana which I found as a midi file on the internet.
I've created a new Garageband Song and using the fixed1t software instruments, I've laid out the tracks with a view to converting the song to play on an iPad.
As I have created the song using only software instruments 'they are the green tracks', then Garageband knows their are no real instruments, samples or audio loops in the song and will not let you 'Archive' the song, and the Archive Project tick box is greyed out. You can only do a standard Save.
In order for a Mac Garageband song to 'Save As' an 'Archive Project' song file, you need to ensure that you have a least one sample, real instrument or loop in one of the tracks.
And here is an iPod Touch 5th Generation composite, kindly sent to me by one of my users Robert Thompson
If you haven't checked out my showreel and other fixed1t software videos on You Tube then please do.
If you find this useful please give it the thumbs up or leave a comment.

Now when you select Save As the 'Archive Project' tick box is active and can be ticked and the Archive saved, I usually add the word 'arc' to the end of the filename so I can identify archived song projects.
Once you've Archived a project the tick box becomes inactive.
In order for the 'Archive Project' tick box to become active again the audio samples and loops will need to change. My usual trick is just to delete the loop I added from the Blue Real Instrument track and add it again.
Once I have the Archive Project I can use the fixed1t converter to convert it for the iPad and import it into the iPad and Play it with the right instruments.
